The Petroleum HPV Testing Group has volunteered to sponsor 396 high production volume chemical substances in EPAs "HPV Challenge" program. The number of laboratory animals used will be minimized to the greatest extent possible within the constraints of the programs requirements, and studies will be conducted according to EPA/OECD guidelines. In addition, only laboratories accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) for excellence in animal care will be used. To meet these objectives, the Testing Group has designed a program which maximizes the use of existing health and environmental data while significantly reducing the overall number of tests needed. The similarity of many of the petroleum streams included in the list of substances allows for their grouping into categories based on chemical composition and use in consumer products. Petroleum substances representative of each category will be used as test materials to develop health and environmental effects information which can be extrapolated to all the substances in their category. This will avoid unnecessarily testing similar chemical mixtures. Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International) |
